Carlsberg Brewery Tour

Where: Copenhagen, Denmark

When:  Tuesday, May 1, 2018

Who:    Carslberg Sustainability Director

What: Carlsberg Brewery was founded in 1847 and has been brewing beer ever since.

Innovation: In this day and age, people feel good about working for companies that are taking the time to do their part in saving the planet. Not only does Carlsberg have a fantastic sustainability program - "Together Towards Zero" - they have an excellent idea for beer of the future. Currently, Carlsberg is working on a sustainable bottle made of wood. The innovation behind this bottle is fantastic! Its the same beer in a better bottle.

Sustainability: Below I have embedded the Calsberg sustainability video from their website. Carlsberg is "brewing for today, for a better tomorrow." In 2017 they launched the "Together Towards Zero" plan. It focuses on 4 main factors:

  1. Zero Carbon Footprint

  2. Zero Water Waste

  3. Zero Irresponsible Drinking

  4. Zero Accidents Culture

Carlsberg has also been undergoing massive global changes. There are 3 main beer oligopolies. Carlsberg is working on buying coal based breweries and shutting them down and replacing them with eco friendlier breweries.

They have run special "ads/programs", for instance they created "beer plugs" and gave them out for free. The tag line was that research has proven that louder music makes you drink more, so by providing "beer plugs" they are helping peolpe to be more conscious of how much beer they drink. They also offered for a short period of time free cab rides home. I encourage you to watch the video below, it is inspiring.

How: I encourage Carlsberg to look into the brands of beer that are sold in Canada, and have them market more towards the sustainability and safe drinking concepts. I think what they are doing in Europe could be very beneficial here.

Reflection: Looking at Carlsberg's sustainability initiative and Sail 22 project, it gives me more drive to implement sustainable initiative in my personal life as well as where I work.

Skylab - Technical University of Denmark

Where: Lyngby, Denmark

When:  Wednesday, May 2, 2018

Who:    Skylab - Building 373

What: A building dedicated to start up businesses and innovative entrepreneurs.

"We focus on enabling student innovation and entrepreneurship through our three focus areas; student innovation, company collaboration and academia."

http://www.skylab.dtu.dk/About_us

Innovation: The idea of having a building where students can go and work on individual projects that can help make the world a better place gives hope to other students (like myself) that our generation is determined to succeed. Regardless of where you are in the world. Currently the Skylab is working on a brewery and many other inventions that may one day be leading the world.

Sustainability: The professors that have offices in this building are always there to help young entrepreneurs get connected with other businesses and guide them through the many processes and steps that need to be taken in order to launch new products. Having an open concept idea and availability is crucial for start up companies and young minds to achieve greatness.

How: I believe that if our governments continue to try and cut school funding and close down libraries, our economy will decline at a rapid pace. If the Innovation Cluster in Peterborough was more well known and had a space (like Skylab) at Fleming/Trent, it would make it more accessible to students.

Reflection: Having spaces, like the Innovation Cluster, in Peterborough allows for young entrepreneurs in our city to be more involved. There are many groups that people can join in our area, like Women's Business Network, that are create great networking opportunities, yet are unaffordable for most students, and business owners. If there was more initiative through our governments and more "marketing" about what they do offer to young entrepreneurs, our generation would benefit from it. Again, Skylab works a Triple Helix (just like Kistsa), however, theres works on student innovation, company collaboration and academia. Very, very similar.
